::Pregnant Man, I Dont Think So::

Submitted by Jeana on Monday, 24 November 2008One Comment

I heard about this story a while ago but never had time to do much research on it.
However yesterday while nursing my hangover I watched Discovery Health’s documentary on Thomas Beatie and his/her journey through pregnancy.
I find this story to be incredibly misleading. Although Thomas Beatie thinks of himself as a a man and the state of Hawaii considers him a man, he still possesses the reproduction organs of a woman.

Which leads me to the question what makes a man a man and a woman a woman?
According to Merriam-Webster a male is defined as,

a: a male person : a man or a boy b: an individual that produces small usually motile gametes (as spermatozoa or spermatozoids) which fertilize the eggs of a female

I am in no way saying that Thomas does not have the right to have kids or consider HIMSELF a man. However by the very definition he is still a woman. Therefore this entire story is not really a story at all. It is an over exaggeration of a trans-gendered male having a baby because his wife cannot.

Thomas Beatie did an interview with Oprah defending his right to have a biological baby.

Despite removing his breast, growing a wispy beard, and legally having his gender changed from female to male, Beatie, 34, kept his female sex organs intact because he hoped to have a child some day.

If you missed the documentary on Discovery Health’s it will be airing one more time this week, Nov 24th at 1:00 am.
I strongly suggest setting your Tivo to record and checking it out.

I just wanted to thank you very much for this illuminating article. I have already bookmarked your site, when I have more free time I am going to have to do some further browsing. Well back to my dreaming of Panama or back to the books – I wonder which one is going to win out. :)
